Bondi Beach: Australia's most famous beach

There are a tonne of cities that are renowned the world over as centres of culture, architectural beauty and tourism. But what about beaches? Well, there’s Waikiki, Malibu, Copacabana, Ipanema, Acapulco... and then all the way on the other side of the world, there’s Bondi. So what makes this comparatively isolated strip of coastline a veritable mecca among the sun worshippers of the known universe?

Bondi Beach is seven kilometres east of Sydney’s central business district, making it the closest ocean beach to the city. “Bondi” (pronounced bond-EYE) is an aboriginal word, meaning “water breaking over rocks." It’s a visually stunning beach, with a wide strip of white sand bounded by the cliffs of Tamarama and Ben Buckler Point. The area around Bondi was developed as early as the beginning of the 1800s, and the beach was made a public reserve in 1882.

Today, Bondi is the preferred weekend beach destination for thousands of Sydneysiders, and attracts almost one million international visitors every year. On a blazing hot Sydney summer’s day, up to 40,000 people can be found sweltering in the sun and cooling off in the surf – a lot of bodies for a one kilometre (1.6 mile) long beach!

Bondi is a south facing beach, and often subject to fairly energetic surf conditions. North Bondi is the calmest section of the beach, and is considered the best area for swimmers and beginner surfers. Be extremely wary of shallow rocks however, and the prevalence of tidal rips, especially along the northern rocks and the southern end of the beach.

Always swim between the flags, pay heed to any warning signs and ask for advice if you’re unsure of whether to get in. Bondi Beach is patrolled 365 days a year by professional lifeguards known as “the boys in blue." During the busy summer months, volunteer lifesavers in red and yellow are also on hand to ensure the safety of swimmers.

Bondi is more than just a surfing, swimming and sunbathing destination. It’s home to all kinds of outdoor activities – there’s a skate park, beach volleyball tournaments, outdoor markets, a grassy knoll that’s frequently set up for chill DJ sessions and of course a myriad of trendy bars, restaurants, cafés and takeaways lining the beachside boulevard of Campbell Parade. Bondi is also the starting point for the scenic Eastern Beaches Coastal Walk.

For local residents, Bondi is a lifestyle as much as it is an address. Some are there for the sand and surf, some for the buzzing nightlife, while others adore the fashionable vibe and the breezy café culture. For most visitors, Bondi Beach is a tantalising mixture of all three – the perfect destination for the sociable beach bum.
