This walk along the water’s edge traverses some of Sydney’s most spectacular coastline. With its mix of wind-worn limestone rock formations, rugged cliff tops, abundant flora and fauna and multi-million dollar homes, it’s a feast for the eye and the camera lens.
Bondi to Coogee Beach along the recently upgraded walkway is a six kilometre walk that’ll take two hours to complete at a steady pace. But, you can count on much longer if you’re taking photos, stopping for a swim or taking time out at one of the many beachside cafés. It’s possible to continue south past Coogee to Maroubra Beach – and, if you’re prepared to do a little walking on the road, all the way to La Perouse – a truly epic accomplishment.
The walk begins at what’s perhaps Australia’s most famous tourist destination, the one kilometre arc of golden sand known as Bondi. Next, you’ll pass the ultra-exclusive suburb of Tamarama Beach (affectionately nicknamed Glamarama), known just as well for its dangerous surf conditions as its well-to-do inhabitants. Bronte Beach is perhaps the most scenic of all the beaches. Backed by lush parkland and a lively café strip, it’s an ultra-relaxed place and a favourite with families.
Beyond Bronte you’ll pass one of the world’s most stunningly located functional cemeteries, Waverley Cemetery, where marble angels gaze serenely out over the eternal expanse of the Pacific Ocean. Clovelly Beach, with its natural tidal rock pool, is a safe spot for swimming and a favourite with snorkelers. Round the headland past glittering Gordon’s Bay you’ll at last come to Coogee Beach, a bustling family favourite by day and a buzzing night spot after dark.
The walk is an easy one, but there are some steep stairs, particularly between Coogee and Clovelly. Keep your eye out for seabirds and dolphins, and between May and October you might even spot a pod of migrating humpback whales.
