Eclectic fashion, live entertainment, gourmet eats and a funky inner-city vibe make the Glebe Market one of Sydney’s best-loved Saturday shopping destinations. The Glebe Market has expanded over the years to feature a family-friendly atmosphere and stalls to suit every taste, but Glebe’s alternative, bohemian flair still lingers with outrageous fashions out on parade and long-time local vendors selling recycled clothing, vinyl records, antique curios, Asian crafts and organic fare. There’s plenty of room to stretch out on the grass as incense and drumbeats fill the air and local buskers do their best to impress.
While Glebe Markets are a hotspot for vintage fashion lovers, you’ll also find pristine designer label goods (usually end of sale items or excess stock) at significantly discounted prices. It’s also a great place to get to know some of Sydney’s up-and-coming fashion designers who come to show off their latest ideas and creations. Handmade jewellery is big here, along with leather goods, secondhand books and music, furniture, paintings, carvings, candles, unique homewares and a wide assortment of weird and wonderful bric-a-brac.
After a good few hours rummaging for funky treasure, indulge in a restorative massage, an iced chai or a fresh juice. Have your palm read by a fortune teller, or take part in an impromptu African drumming lesson. Like any good market, there’s fabulous food in abundance, from organic fruit and vegetables to Turkish gozleme, Shanghai dumplings, noodles, pies and pastries.
