Viewed from above, the towering Sydney IMAX Theatre is shaped like a gigantic eye and holds the distinction of having the largest cinema screen anywhere in the world at an immense 29.42m (96.5 feet) tall and 35.7m (117 feet) wide.
IMAX cameras capture startlingly clear images, 10 times larger than the traditional-format. The literally larger-than-life imagery gives the viewer a unique sense of being inside the action – flying through space, surfing monster waves, soaring over the American Grand Canyon or walking among dinosaurs.
Combined with thundering digital surround-sound, the IMAX theatre makes for a truly immersive experience. And for an even more eye-popping experience, the IMAX regularly schedules films in 3D. Shot with a special two-lens camera to represent the left and right eyes and recorded on separate reels of film, the 3D illusion is complete with the help of a pair of funky glasses that allow each eye to see only the left or the right image.
Located near the water at Darling Harbour, the Sydney IMAX Theatre screens specially produced IMAX documentaries, as well as the latest movie blockbusters and animated spectaculars, 365 days a year. All the usual cinema snacks and drinks are available at the IMAX Candy Bar, and the theatre is situated in the heart of Darling Harbour’s bar-and-restaurant precinct, perfect for a dinner-and-a-movie date.
