Rising high above the city streets, Sydney Tower (variously known as AMP Tower and Centrepoint Tower, depending on who you ask) is Sydney’s tallest freestanding structure and one of its most famous landmarks.
A slim, cylindrical building crowned by a golden turret, it consists of a street level shopping centre, offices, two revolving restaurants, two telecommunications transmission levels and the best bit – the observation deck, which sits at 250 metres (820 feet) above ground level. If you’re feeling fit, you can get there up a flight of 1,504 stairs – or, for those without legs of steel, by a 40-second elevator ride from Pitt Street Mall. The views are breathtaking, spanning a full 360 degrees from the heart stoppingly beautiful harbour to the distant Blue Mountains in the west.
If shuffling around the fully enclosed deck and playing with the old school coin-op telescopes isn’t quite exciting enough for you, you can venture out into the open air on the 60 minute Skywalk tour.
A thrilling way to see the city and overcome your fear of heights, the Skywalk is a moving, glass-floored platform suspended over the edge of the golden turret. It’s an exhilarating experience, with 250 metres of void literally dropping away beneath your feet to the city streets below.
Every Skywalk begins with a safety briefing and a quick change into the protective, all-weather skysuits. Harnessed to safety rails by sliding cables, you’ll be safely escorted along the purpose-built walkways and platforms by enthusiastic skyguides who’ll point out the city’s geographical, historical and cultural landmarks along the way. More than twice as high as the Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb, Skywalk is the most high altitude fun you can have in the city, and a great way to see the sights from a completely unique perspective.
