There’s nothing like a good fun run to bring out the inner athlete (or the glaringly apparent lack thereof) in all of us. Held not only in Sydney but in major cities and regional centres across Australia, the annual Mother’s Day Classic Run for breast cancer research is the nation’s largest charity event. On Mother’s Day, Sunday May 8, thousands of Australians will join together in the great outdoors, raising funds for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
In Sydney, there will be two Mother’s Day Classic Fun Run events taking place, one in the Domain in the city’s east, and another in Parramatta Park. Participants can decide whether to enter in the 4km or the 8km run, and if you’re not the speediest sprinter around, you can always just walk! Remember, it’s all in good fun, and all in the name of charity. Every runner pays an entry fee, which of course goes straight to the Breast Cancer Foundation, and if you really want to make a big impact, get a team together to raise extra funds and setup your own fundraising page on the Mother’s Day Classic website. If running isn’t your thing, you can sign up as a volunteer, or just come along to show your support.
On the day there’ll be entertainment and activities set up around the course, and food stalls, a sausage sizzle, snacks and drinks to help you refuel after the run. All participants are in the running for spot prizes, given out around the course on the day.
Participants are encouraged to fill in and wear a personalised tribute card in memory of a loved one, or with words of encouragement to someone currently undergoing treatment. Visit the Mother’s Day Classic Fun Run website to register for the run and create and print out a tribute card to wear on the day.
