Bright, bustling and energetic with a rich history and a hip, urban façade, Darlinghurst Sydney is one of the oldest and most densely populated suburbs of the city located just east of the Sydney Central Business District. Regarded as a slum, a red light district and a den of corruption and crime for more than a century, Darlinghurst Sydney has undergone urban renewal since the 1980s to become a diverse, cosmopolitan and largely upmarket inner city hot spot.
The main thoroughfare of Darlinghurst is Oxford Street, the heartland of Sydney’s gay community. It’s a jam-packed dining and entertainment strip, and home to the famous annual Mardi Gras Parade. The still rather red-lighty Kings Cross precinct is located in the suburb’s north, housing a garish mix of seedy bars, takeaway joints and glamorous nightclubs. Numerous restaurants are also found on trendy Victoria Street and Italian-dominated Stanley Street. Prominent Darlinghurst landmarks include the Sydney Jewish Museum, Darlinghurst Gaol (1840) and Darlinghurst Courthouse (1844). Local institutions include the Tropicana and Bar Coluzzi cafés, and the 24 hour Taxi Club.
